How it works

A certificate that says two true things.

You learned something and proved it — and you planted a tree. Both have to be real, so both are checked. That's what makes a free certificate worth something.

01

Learn

Find a session on 101school.org, register and join live — or watch the recording.

02

Prove

Answer 10 random questions from the mentor's bank of 50. Eight correct is a pass.

03

Plant

Plant a tree that will benefit your neighbourhood.

04

Certify

Upload a geo-tagged selfie with the tree; the certificate is issued.

05

Connect

Share it, join the community, learn more and maybe mentor.

Step 2 · Prove

The quiz: short, fair, hard to fake.

Every learner gets a different set of 10 questions drawn from the mentor's 50 — so sharing answers is of little use.

Questions10 of 50+Random, balanced by difficulty
Pass mark80%8 or more correct
Time15 minOptions shuffled
Attempts324 hours apart, fresh questions
Window30 daysOpen to live and recording viewers

After three unsuccessful attempts, re-attend the session (or a later run) to unlock new attempts. Results and the correct answers to missed questions are shown straight away.

Step 3 · The Green Step

Passing the quiz unlocks your tree.

You have 30 days to plant a tree and upload proof. Your Country Ambassador can extend this to 60 days in a dry season.

A good tree is…

  • Useful: shade, fruit, fodder, soil or wildlife
  • Native or well-adapted to your region
  • Planted with permission, clear of wires and walls
  • A young sapling, cared for through its first year

Not accepted

  • Indoor pot plants or ornamental shrubs
  • Invasive species on the regional list
  • Trees on protected land without authority
  • Photos of trees that already existed

No place to plant?

Country Ambassadors run group planting days with schools, local authorities and nurseries on approved sites. Each learner still plants and photographs their own tree.

Step 4 · Certify

Why the selfie is taken live.

You take the photo with the camera button on 101school.org, which records GPS location and time at that moment. Messaging apps strip location data and gallery uploads are easy to fake.

  • Your face and the new tree together, with the ground visible
  • No location on your device? Drop a pin on a map and a person reviews it
  • Automatic checks: inside your country, captured within 24 hours, no duplicate photo or location
  • People check too: flagged uploads within 7 days, 10% spot checks every month
Go to the Green Step
On every certificate
  • Learner, session title, type and date
  • Mentor and quiz score (the score can be hidden)
  • Town or city of the tree — never the exact point
  • Unique ID, e.g. 101-BD-2026-000123
  • QR code and digital signatures, verifiable at 101school.org/verify

Tree Guardian: at 6 and 12 months you're reminded to upload a new photo of your tree. A certificate is never withdrawn because a tree didn't survive.
